All colleges and universities require applicants to demonstrate certain capabilities via a range of pre-admission tests. These tests ensure prospective students meet the institution's minimum standards and are at par with the rest of the student body. In the United Kingdom entrance tests predominantly involve the English language proficiency of foreign student applicants, although some do gauge academic aptitude for specific degrees or courses. In the United States and Canada, there are two kinds of entrance tests: those which measure academic capabilities and those which gauge English language proficiency.
