Institute of Education at the University of London
Introduction
The Institute of Education (IOE), part of the University of London, was founded in 1902. Today, it is the UK's number one university for education studies, and one of the worlds most respected and prestigious graduate schools in the social sciences. The IOE is located in central London and offers its 6,500 students an unrivalled range of Masters and Doctoral opportunities.
Course information
Within this field, the IOE is the UK's number one institution - the most recent government Research Assessment Exercise officially recognized us as the top university for education. Of most interest to international students are Masters and Doctoral programs - details below.
Masters degrees
The IOE offers over 50 Masters Degrees in education - an unprecedented number in the UK. An IOE Masters degree normally takes at least one year, with many courses beginning in the autumn. Entry points in January and April are available for some degrees.
Some of the most popular Masters programs are:
- MA Leadership
- MBA Educational Leadership
- MA Education and International Development
- MA Special and Inclusive Education
- MA Economics of Education
- MA Early Years Education
- MA Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment
- MA Education (Psychology)
- MA Media, Culture and Communication
- MA Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Education
- MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (online or in London)
Doctoral degrees
The IOE's Doctoral School is the largest in the field of education in the UK. The Doctoral School provides a stimulating community for students and academics, working in one of the world's most distinguished hubs for research in the social sciences.
A range of research degrees are offered by the IOE:
- PhD in Education - a traditional research project carried out independently with supervisory support from a member of the IOE's academic staff.
- Doctor in Education (EdD) - an international, flexibly-delivered, professional doctorate combining a substantial taught element with independent research.
- Doctor in Educational Psychology - a professional doctorate for those with an established background in education psychology.
- All Doctoral students receive highly respected training in research methodologies as part of their program.
Research focused Masters Degrees are available.
Fee structure
As tuition fees are revised annually, and have not yet been set for 2011/12, students are recommended to check for current information, and to return regularly for updates on tuition fees.
Scholarships
The IOE has its own prestigious scholarships scheme - the Centenary Scholarships - which was established in 2002 to celebrate the Institute's 100th birthday. These scholarships are awarded to students domiciled outside of Europe, and are generous full scholarships which remit tuition fees and provide a stipend to cover most living expenses.
A range of other scholarships are also available, including from the Commonwealth Commission in a range of IOE Masters subjects. Students from India are encouraged to apply.
Campus and facilities
The IOE is located in the heart of central London in the beautiful and historic Bloomsbury district. Home to the British Library, the British Museum and a short walk to the famous theatres, restaurants and galleries of London's West End, Bloomsbury is the intellectual and cultural heart of the city. On campus, the Sir Peter Newsam Library at the IOE is the largest education library in Europe.
Student accommodation
IOE students are fortunate to have a range of options when deciding where to live in London. To help you make the best choice, the IOE has a team of accommodation and welfare support staff who can offer advice and assistance. Some of the options are listed below:
- John Adams Hall is the IOE's own student residence. Recently refurbished and located around 5 minutes' walk from the IOE's main building, it offers great value for money and a central London location. All rooms are self-catering via shared kitchens, and all have high-speed wireless internet access.
- University of London Halls are open to full-time students of the IOE, subject to availability.
- Private accommodation is plentiful in London. The IOE's accommodation advisers can assist students in finding appropriate privately rented accommodation.
Transport around the IOE campus
The IOE is well located for local, national and international travel.
