University of Stirling

Founded by Royal Charter in 1967, the University of Stirling was the first genuinely new university in Scotland for over 400 years. Stirling is one of the UK's leading universities in the fields of health and wellbeing, the environment and people, culture and society, enterprise and the economy, and sport.

In learning and teaching, university work with their student community to deliver high quality programmes that produce intellectually able graduates who are highly sought after by employers. There is a vibrant and growing postgraduate community and university welcome students, researchers and staff from around the world. This gives research and teaching a global outlook, while remaining relevant to their Scottish culture and economy.
There are around 2,300 residential places on-campus, with most overlooking the loch with views towards the Wallace Monument, and everywhere is just a few minutes' walk away.

University centralized facilities encourage a strong community feel and provide much to occupy students time outside lectures, tutorials and lab work. Facilities at Stirling include:
- the University Library
- 24 hour computer lab access
- the Robbins Students' Centre and 'Studio' bar
- a shopping precinct, including a bank, bookshop, travel agent, pharmacy and supermarket
- extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities
- a 50-metre swimming pool
- a nine-hole golf course and driving range
- the MacRobert Arts Centre, with theatre, cinema, café/bar and award-winning entertainment
- a publicly accessible Art Collection
- a wide range of excellent cafés and restaurants
Stirling was designated as Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence by the Scottish Government in 2008, and is acknowledged as Scotland's leading university for sport. The University has a comprehensive range of sports facilities and is one of only sixteen universities in the UK with 5-star sports facilities. The University has its own 9-hole golf course and driving range, and a host of other sporting facilities are located in and around the campus. The Gannochy National Tennis Centre on the University campus is recognized as a national centre of excellence, and the campus also has an indoor 50 metre swimming pool, badminton and squash courts, a fitness centre, strength and conditioning centre, sports halls and all-weather playing fields available for student, staff and public use. The campus has been selected as the headquarters for a number of sports agencies including the sportscotland institute of sport, the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland, Scottish Swimming and triathlonscotland. A new 50-metre swimming pool was completed in 2001 as part of the Scottish National Swimming Academy. Falkirk FC opened a football academy on campus in 2008, and the Scottish Women's National Football Academy opened in 2009.
Stirling has offered modular degree programs allowing greater flexibility and choice. Stirling was the first university in UK to introduce the system of two semesters rather than having three terms. The first semester lasts from mid-September to mid-December and the second from mid-February to the end of May. There are now over 256 courses (including combination courses) at the undergraduate degree level. A wide variety of courses are also available at the postgraduate level.
Stirling is a city and former ancient burgh in Scotland, and is at the heart of the wider Stirling council area. The city is clustered around a large fortress and medieval old-town beside the River Forth. Historically it was strategically important as the "Gateway to the Highlands", with its position near the boundary between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands, and its crossing of the Forth, the nearest to the river mouth. Once the Capital of Scotland, Stirling boosts a Great Hall (restored 1999) and Renaissance palace (under restoration) within the Castle that rivalled any building in Europe at the time. Stirling also has its medieval parish church, The Church of the Holy Rude, where King James VI was crowned King of Scots on 29 July 1567. Also it is a home of Scottish war hero William Wallace.
