The ELC at RIT
Rochester Institute of Technology's English Language Center is designed to teach ESL to students who plan to attend a university in the United States and who have previously studied English. The English Language Center conducts 11-week programs every fall, winter, spring and summer with shorter programs in January and July.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes are held on the 1,300-acre campus of RIT, an internationally acclaimed university offering innovative programs in such fields as imaging science, photography, printing, computer science, engineering, microelectronics, business and fine and applied arts.
RIT is in Rochester, New York, the world's imaging center, and offers modern housing and a great suburban location.

Membership and Accreditation
Rochester Institute of Technology and The English Language Center are accredited by Middle States. The English Language Center subscribes to the guidelines of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and TESOL: Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. It has met the standards and is a member of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).

Rochester Institute of Technology
Founded in 1829, RIT is a private technological university. It is located on a beautiful, modern 1,300-acre campus in the town of Henrietta, a suburb of Rochester, New York. RIT comprises eight colleges: Applied Science and Technology; Business; Computing and Information Sciences; Engineering; Imaging Arts and Sciences; Liberal Arts; Science; and the federally funded National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Currently, more than 1,400 international students, representing 90 countries worldwide, are enrolled at RIT.
The University has wonderful facilities for its 15,000 students. There is a library, weight room, indoor track, indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, indoor ice-skating rink, and several cafeterias. There is a Health Center with two doctors, special services on immigration issues for international students and a child care center which cares for young children while parents are in classes.
Program Description
English Program
The English Language Center at Rochester Institute of Technology is designed for students who plan to attend a university in the United States and who have previously studied English. The English Language Center conducts 11-week programs every fall, winter, spring and summer. There are shorter sessions beginning in January, June and July. Special language programs for groups and individuals are also offered.
Classes
Full-time students in the intensive English program have at least 20 class-hours weekly in grammar, reading, writing, conversation and vocabulary. Classes are offered at three skill levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Students also study in the language lab five hours per week.
Orientation
During the first few days, students participate in orientation activities to become familiar with the English Language Center, RIT and the city of Rochester. They also take English language proficiency tests and are placed at the level which best serves their needs. Instructors from the English Language Center are assigned as advisers to help students with cultural adjustment, housing, and university admission. Advanced level students may be permitted to take one or two classes at the University for Credit. Students on student visas may work on campus and enjoy university life.
Fun
Extracurricular activities are also offered every week: trips to Niagara Falls and other nature parks, visits to local museums and art galleries, and opportunities for sport and recreation, as well as chances to visit American homes.
