Syracuse University
Syracuse University is a private institution that was founded in 1870. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 13,736, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 200 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Syracuse University's ranking in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 55.
The school's campus sits on University Hill, above the sprawling city of Syracuse in central New York State. With about 100 inches of snowfall each year, the bitter cold winters at Syracuse University give students plenty of opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding on nearby mountains. On campus, there are more than 300 student clubs and organizations.
SU offers undergraduate degrees in over 200 majors in the 9 undergraduate schools and colleges. Bachelor's degrees are offered through the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the College of Human Ecology, the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Information Studies, Martin J. Whitman School of Management, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Also offered are Master's and doctoral degrees from the Graduate School and from specialized programs in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, College of Law, among others. Additionally, SU offers 24 Certificates of Advanced Study Programs for specialized programs for education, counseling, and other academic areas.
About 20 percent of Syracuse students are involved in Greek life, though only juniors and seniors may live in Greek housing. All freshmen and sophomore students must live in on-campus housing.
Syracuse University athletic teams, known as the Orange, participate in 20 intercollegiate sports. SU is a member of the Big East Conference for all NCAA Division I athletics, except for women's ice hockey, and the rowing team. SU is also a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
At Syracuse University, 58.8 percent of full-time undergraduates receive some kind of need-based financial aid and the average need-based scholarship or grant award is $21,300.
Undergraduates and graduate students alike can take classes at the Syracuse University campus in Florence, Italy. Freshmen enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences can even spend their first semester studying abroad through the Discover Florence program. Syracuse University graduate students may take courses at Cornell University and the University of Rochester through the schools' Scholar Exchange Program. Notable alumni include Vice President Joe Biden, actor Jerry Stiller, football player Donovan McNabb, and former Miss America Vanessa Williams.
